Paving, part one
(More blog entries from howie)
It's a start...
This morning, May 29, dawned an unfortunately typical spring day on Mt Washington. While it wasn't raining or snowing, it was very cloudy with 33F temperatures and winds in the 45 - 60 range. Not optimal for our planned two day paving operation to start with. The flat bed truck delivering the roller to the 6.5 mile area was parked on the side with visability so limited he couldnt' see the Road to continue up - he needed not only to be able to see clearly but to see far enough ahead to make the necessary course adjustments to negotiate the hairpin turn properly in the huge rig he was operating. Finally the clouds lifted enough for him to continue but by then the reality of the overall weather had become obvious and the decision was made to jump back down the Auto Road several miles and pave the lower section first. Unfortunately this meant that lower section would be the only one accomplished today.
Tomorrow we hope to get back up to the upper mountain and continue with the larger and most important section which will take all day - here's hoping that the threat of afternoon rain doesn't materialize!

I never realized the challenges you all face every season! Good luck and may the weather favor you the rest of the Auto Road season...and kayaking and mountain biking and running....

Thanks for your comments. We'll be getting some reflectors and lines down on the new stuff in the next week or so to help with the night time travel.
