Mt. Washington Alternative Energy Day on the Mt. Washington Auto Road

Pinkham Notch, NH—On Sunday, June 19, the Mt. Washington Auto Road will host Mt. Washington Alternative Energy Day, a day to celebrate alternatively-powered vehicles.

Since the Mt. Washington Carriage Road first opened, it has been a proving ground for all manner of vehicles, including Freelan Stanley in 1899, when he drove his steam-powered Locomobile to the summit. The Locomobile ushered in the gasoline-powered era on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which continued unabated until the fuel crisis of the 1970’s. The fuel crisis spawned the Mt. Washington Alternative Vehicle Regatta, which set out to prove that the United States need not be dependant on gasoline. In that spirit, Mt. Washington Alternative Energy Day celebrates today’s new vehicle technology and the many ways to reach the top of the mountain.

All vehicles that meet the vehicle limitations and are alternatively-powered will be charged a reduced toll of $25, including passengers. The Mt. Washington Auto Road hopes to welcome many hybrid car owners as well as one-off inventors and invites them to meet at the base of Mt. Washington to discuss their experience of owning and driving such vehicles.
